THE ART OF THE HANDBAG

A Contemporary Collection

“Nathalie Hambro’s designs are unique: neither a reflection of passing fashion nor, a product of theories in vogue, they are the result of an entirely independent pursuit of the eclectic. She has taken the old criteria for measuring worth – beauty of form, perfection of workmanship and value of material – and enrich them with her very precise sense of irony.”

PARTICULAR DELIGHTS

Hambro’s first cookery book Particular Delights won the prestigious Glenfiddich Award, and had several reprints, the last one as a hardback in 2013. The same year the book was listed in A Book for Cooks: 101 Classic Cookbooks as one of the best cookery books ever written, (Hambro wrote further cookery books).

First published in 1881 Particular Delights was reissued  in a newly designed edition but retained the delightful line drawings by Thao Soun from the original edition. The book is about the art of eating as much as the art of cooking.

LUNCHBOX

The Lunchbox was initially designed to contain Hambro’s recipe book LUNCHBOX, a limited edition, hand-bound cookery book, but the story went otherwise as the box become an instant success and about 20.000 were sold. It became such an iconic object that the eponymous tv programme: The Big Breakfast, featured it animated at all commercial breaks for a year and half.

MY LONDON

“My book is a, long overdue, kind of love letter to the city, where I have lived since my early twenties, after moving from Paris. The magic of London doesn’t strike you at first, but the city is imbued with a secret charm, and one has to venture into a journey of discovery to see unfold its hidden treasures. Like with a person, superficial beauty loses its attraction very soon, unless there is some soulfulness to discover beyond it. The observation of London geographic, and cultural environment, consciously organised or not, and of the city’s many boroughs has a specific effects on the emotions and behaviour of its habitants. The city for me is totally beguiling, but there is nothing complacent about it.”

UP AND DOWN IN THE ART WORLD

Artist’s Book, Limited Edition of 50 (2014)

Up and Down in the Art World is a limited-edition artist’s book presenting a compelling visual collection of stairs pertaining to art-world locations I photographed for a project that lasted several years and in different locations worldwide. The photographic style doesn’t adopt a uniform, formal architectural approach, as it is triggered by my personal artistic vision, using randomly different cameras and processes, capturing a particular view and mood for each image. The photos are taken from arts institutions, galleries, auctions houses, artwork exhibitions, patrons and artists studios.
Available from the Lous Vuitton art bookshop, London.

SIN-UNSEEN

Artist book, limited edition of 50, (2013)

Sin-Unseen is a collection of Polaroids. The book opens with a combination lock and slips into a reflective fabric pouch. Each copy has its own hand-dyed, embroidered ‘manipulative’ gloves. Before leafing through the pages, layers of wrapping are unfolded, emphasising an anticipation ritual. All the images have a deep relationship with intimate moments of Hambro’s life expressed through visual fragments, elliptical metaphors, and abstract surface.
